Position Description

Under general supervision of the Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) attending physician, provides primary medical management for oncology/BMT patients (outpatient). Leads by example demonstrating professional image and advanced practice core competencies. Acts as a liaison within the BMT Program to promote consistent medical management of the patients across the health care continuum by collaborating with the multidisciplinary care team. Demonstrates exceptional written and verbal communication skills and critical thinking. Performs specialized procedures such as bone marrow biopsy, lumbar puncture, IT chemo and skin biopsy. Presents patient cases during daily rounds and at the weekly BMT Clinical meetings. Provides patient/family and staff education. Supports the development and revision of BMT divisional policies and procedures. Participates in and/or initiates research. Participates in community outreach and networking with community physicians and other health care professionals. May provide care to BMT patients in the inpatient setting at UC San Diego Health. Develops and expands role responsibilities as patient and system needs change. While not required, a cover letter is highly recommended when applying to this position.

Qualifications

Must be a graduate from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). California Physician Assistant (PA) license. Current PA Certification from NCCPA. BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within 6 months of hire date. Minimum one (1) year recent work experience as a licensed Physician Assistant in hematology, oncology, and cellular transplant, Emergency Department, or adult critical care. Possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position. Specific qualification requirements are defined for positions by the appropriate user departments. Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with attending physicians and the patient's primary medical team. Knowledge of the pathology of the BMT/Oncology patient population and expected outcomes. Critical thinking skills. Ability to pay conscientious attention to detail. Demonstrated knowledge of adult and adolescent learning theory. Demonstrated experience developing and organizing training for patients and staff. Demonstrated experience diagnosing and treating oncology patients, preferably Blood and Marrow Transplant patients. Demonstrated experience working independently as a Physician Assistant and exercising independent clinical judgment with demonstrated experience formulating and modifying specialized BMT treatment plans. Demonstrated experience taking detailed medical history, performing physical examinations, and interpreting findings. Demonstrated understanding of normal and abnormal laboratory values, diagnostic tests, electrocardio tracings and radiologic studies; and identification of deviations.
