Department Overview: The Department of Education Studies at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), founded in 1972, offers several programs for those interested in beginning careers in education or in furthering their study in the field of education. Our Master's Programs in Elementary and Secondary Education support the goal of equity and educational excellence in our public schools. In our undergraduate and master’s programs, students learn research-based teaching practices and engage in extensive reflection and writing on their classroom practice. EDS also offers one of the few Master's programs in ASL-Bilingual Education, with an emphasis in American Sign Language - English Bilingual Education of Deaf Children. Candidates who complete this teacher training program also qualify for the California Education Specialist: Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teaching Credential. In our Doctoral programs (Ph.D. in Education, Doctorate in Educational Leadership), we enable exemplary professional educators to participate in research-based programs while working in an educational setting. Education Studies has a broad range of academic faculty that includes: Senate faculty, Unit 18 Lecturers, Teaching faculty and affiliated faculty members. The department annually provides over 70 graduate courses with course enrollments that average 1300 students; EDS has approximately 45 undergraduate courses each year with enrollments of over 4600 students annually in our major & minor programs. Our faculty bring a wide variety of teaching, research, leadership, and disciplinary backgrounds to their work at EDS. Position Overview: The Research Program Manager will possess a high degree of knowledge in education, with recognized expertise in specific areas, including research practice partnerships and the co-development and mobilization of knowledge across research, policy, practice, and intermediaries in the field of education. The incumbent will oversee and manage cross-sector collaborations and research projects and other initiatives that may include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources. They will problem-solve efforts that frequently requires the analysis of unique issues/problems without precedent and/or structure. The incumbent will function with a high degree of autonomy. The incumbent will design, implement, evaluate, and manage cross-sector programs research studies in the field of education. Manage project development, planning and implementation of data collection and analytic methodologies (quantitative and qualitative), and monitoring, summarizing, and iteratively using research findings. Design and refine data collection tools and systems, as well as other study techniques and processes. Develop and maintain databases of relevant instruments; review and recommend resources needed to meet goals; and coordinate and manage data collection, analysis, and use. The incumbent will design and oversee monitoring efforts to ensure that research projects are on track and within budget. They will design and oversee the presentation of research knowledge for public good for research, policy, practitioner, funder, and intermediary audiences. They will provide training and work direction to lower-level staff and students, as needed. Must be able and willing to travel (domestic and internationally) and work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends when required. Qualifications
Demonstrated experience typically (4 years) in K-12 education, management, and leadership running mid-sized research and development projects, managing website development and software integration for analytic purposes, including but not limited to AI and social network analysis. Demonstrated experience working with faculty, educational practitioners, educational policymakers, and educational intermediaries in developing research and program plans and in writing and securing contracts, grants, and/or other support from public and private funding sources for the social sciences. Experience facilitating communications with faculty and researchers across a broad range of disciplines and cultures. Ability to identify and promote research excellence of academics and programs. Solid fundraising experience. Demonstrated experience administering programs, including budgeting, fiscal management, marketing, promotion, program revision, expansion, and evaluation. Demonstrated ability to manage website and software development for integration of research analysis and public knowledge. Thorough knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources, and financial principles and practices. Strong oral and written communication skills. Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results. Strong ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers. Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. High level of political acumen, diplomacy, professionalism, and integrity to act appropriately and with sensitivity in a culturally diverse environment. Superior oral, written, presentation and personal communication skills. Ability to clearly and concisely present ideas, concepts and detailed technical information in a multidisciplinary setting, and to funding organizations and representatives as well as to those possessing minimal technical backgrounds. PREFERRED: Seven (7) years of research experience with proven experience in fields of research related to education, particularly related to research-practice partnerships. Clear K-12 teaching or administrative credential. Academic background and experience in the selected area of research preferred. Terminal degree in EdD or a related field.
