Position Description

The Anesthesia Preparedness Clinic (APC) Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides comprehensive preoperative health assessments prior to surgery to ensure medical optimization before anesthesia. The NP, in accordance with standardized procedures, will conduct in-depth interviews with patients and/or family, construct comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and periodic physical examinations, evaluate patient behavior, and explore patients' interpretation of health needs. NPs directly perform or order appropriate diagnostic studies and interpret the results; and develop and implement long- and short-range treatment plans. NPs work in collaboration with other health care team members, consulting and referring as appropriate, but retain responsibility for the ongoing clinical management of the patient. NPs assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The nurse is expected to practice consistent with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Independent judgment is expected within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care. Under general supervision, assignments at this level primarily encompass management of patients who present chronic and/or episodic health problems. Assignments at this level may include responsibility for occasional community teaching programs, participation in program planning, and development of patient education information. While not required, a cover letter is highly recommended when applying to this position.
Qualifications
Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program. Current State of California Registered Nurse (RN) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) License, State of California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number. Current Nurse Practitioner (NP) Specialty Certification from one of the following Nursing Boards: AANP, ANCC, NCC, PNCB, AACN. BLS/CPR or BART certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six (6) months of hire date. A minimum of three (3) years of recent experience as a Nurse Practitioner in a high-acuity setting such as perioperative services, critical care, emergency medicine, or cardiology, pulmonology, or endocrinology. Experience in preoperative evaluation, risk stratification, and medical optimization of complex patients in a preoperative setting. Demonstrated ability to independently assess, perform comprehensive histories, synthesize, and document clinical findings and formulate evidence-based care plans. Experience ordering, interpreting diagnostics, and developing care plans. Proven ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams. Must be able to function in a fast-paced environment, have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and consistently demonstrate empathy and kindness to all staff and patients.
