Position Description

The Preuss School UCSD is a charter middle and high school dedicated to providing a rigorous college prep education for motivated low-income students who will become the first in their families to graduate from college. As part of UCSD, a major research institution, The Preuss School also serves as a model school to study and develop best practices in the preparation of low-income urban students for college admission to be disseminated to improve public education. The Preuss Advantage Scholar Academic Specialist will coordinate tutoring services for The Preuss School UC San Diego, supporting scholars in grades 6–12 through voluntary matches with tutors via Zoom. This role will manage the logistics of scheduling and pairing scholars with tutors for sessions held after school and on weekends. The Preuss Advantage Scholar Academic Specialist will work to recruit new qualified tutors and ensure all tutors have provided all of the required documentation for clearance to work with Preuss Scholars. Working closely with Preuss teachers, the Specialist will also ensure that individualized tutorial curricula are provided to tutors for each session. The Specialist will ensure that tutoring takes place in a supportive, inclusive environment and will track session attendance, scholar progress, and program outcomes. After each tutorial session, the Specialist will share progress information back to Preuss teachers. The Scholar Academic Specialist will serve as a key liaison between The Preuss School and UC San Diego, leveraging campus resources and expertise to enhance scholar success. This position requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team. The work schedule for this position is from Saturday to Wednesday. The position is expected to come on-site at least 1 day per week, potentially Saturday, to work in the Math Enrichment classrooms with the Preuss Numeracy Coordinator. This position is a variable work hours, hybrid-position requiring both in-person and virtual work. Working evenings and weekends will be required.

Qualifications

Experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations. Experience managing learning environments in Zoom environment. Zoom experience within an academic setting. Experience working with students in a tutoring or academic support setting. Familiarity with academic policies and procedures. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with scholars, parents, and staff from diverse backgrounds. Excellent organizational and problem-solving abilities to manage multiple schedules, needs, and resources. Knowledge of instructional methods for academic support or tutoring programs. Knowledge of learning theories and training models. Knowledge of how learning skills issues apply to a research institution. Knowledge of strategies in critical thinking, reading, writing, note taking, test taking, time management, and goal setting. Skills in judgment and decision-making. Problem-solving skills. Develops knowledge of specific learning theory, learning styles, affective issues, academic issues, and socio-cultural issues in applying academic support for students. Develops knowledge of current and theoretical models that influence the application and delivery of academic services (e.g., discipline specific; student-population specific). Multicultural competencies; knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations. Oral and written communication skills; interpersonal and presentation skills. Proficient computer skills including databases, word processing, spreadsheets, and web-based systems. Ability to communicate information in small and large group settings.
