Position Description

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department within the UCSD School of Medicine and is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. The department employs over 450 full time faculty, 322 residents, fellows and postdocs and 480 staff personnel. After the establishment of the Cardiovascular Institute, the division of Cardiovascular Medicine has grown to include 70+ faculty members. Our research space is co-located within several buildings on and off campus including the Altman Clinical and Translational Research Institute (ACTRI), the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center and on the La Jolla campus, the Salk institute for biological studies, the Biomedical Research Facility-2 and the San Diego VA Medical Center. Under minimal supervision, oversees the overall activities and staff, supporting a research program, including supervision of entry- to intermediate-level research and operational personnel. Typically functions within a small to medium-sized or single-unit research environment. Provides leadership across the development, coordination, and execution of complex or multi-disciplinary research projects, including faculty- and/or sponsor-initiated initiatives. Works collaboratively with affiliated programs and teams, including the Taub Lab research group and Preventative-focused research initiatives, to ensure alignment of operations, resources, and research objectives across areas of responsibility.

Qualifications

Seven years of related experience, education/training, OR an Bachelor’s degree in related area plus three years of related experience/training. Focus of knowledge and skills dependent on area of specialty (laboratory research or instructional / experimental design). Advanced and highly specific knowledge and expertise associated with conducting and reporting on scientific research experiments and findings. Advanced knowledge of a limited variety of specialized laboratory equipment. Leadership skills associated with planning work assignments, establishing priorities and scheduling instructional space. Solid interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff. Knowledge of data acquisition and analysis techniques. Advanced knowledge of research discipline or instructional design to collaborate effectively with faculty and function as a resource to research and instructional associates. Solid interpersonal communication skills to effectively supervise staff. Ability to conduct and report on scientific experiments and findings. Knowledge of necessary lab safety procedures and requirements, as well as chemical disposal guidelines. Knowledge of regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements applicable to research or programmatic activities, including the ability to interpret and apply policies, guidelines, and standards in a complex environment. Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects or activities, including prioritization, timeline management, and coordination of resources to meet established goals and deadlines. Experience with documentation management systems and practices, including maintaining accurate, complete, and audit-ready records in accordance with institutional and external requirements. Ability to identify operational challenges or process gaps and implement effective solutions to improve efficiency, quality, and overall program performance. Knowledge of subject, participant, or material handling considerations, including appropriate coordination, tracking, and adherence to established protocols and requirements. Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including faculty, staff, sponsors, or vendors, to support successful execution of research or programmatic activities. Strong organizational and analytical skills to support data review, tracking, and reporting, ensuring accuracy and alignment with project objectives and requirements. Ability to support and maintain quality assurance and quality control processes to ensure consistency, compliance, and continuous improvement across research or operational activities. Familiarity with systems or platforms used to support research, data management, scheduling, or operational tracking, with the ability to adapt to new technologies as needed.
