Position Description
UC San Diego’s School of Social Sciences (SoSS) includes a diverse group of outstanding departments, programs, centers and research units engaged in increasing opportunities for interdisciplinary study and research. Comprised of 16 academic departments and programs, and a wide range of interdisciplinary research units, Social Sciences is the largest academic School at UCSD in terms of numbers of faculty and undergraduate students. More than 40 percent of all bachelor degrees awarded at UCSD are in the social sciences. Four of the top ten majors, Psychology, Economics, Communication, Political Science are Social Science disciplines. Social Sciences is home to nationally and internationally recognized faculty, including three Nobel Laureates and four MacArthur "genius" Grant recipients. Virtually all of the School's programs rank in the top 20 nationally and many rank in the top 10. Social Sciences has over 260 full-time faculty; 750 graduate students; and approximately one third of the campus' undergraduate majors (13,000) with a total annual course enrollment exceeding 103,000 students. In addition, there are more than 300 staff and 240 student employees housed in 11 buildings across the main campus. IT support for the School is provided by the Social Sciences Computing Facility (SSCF), a consolidated group that offers a shared computing infrastructure and standard policies to all the departments. Applies IT professional concepts, department / unit and campus / medical center / OP policies and procedures to resolve a variety of moderately complex issues in one or more IT areas of specialization. Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained. Under supervision, provide information systems support for a wide variety of issues to faculty, staff and students from the school. As this position is embedded in one or more of the departments, the IT Support Analyst is the first point of contact for many issues and has considerable autonomy to make recommendations and triage decisions within the parameters defined by SSCF standard practices and procedures. Ongoing communication and status updates via the SSCF ticketing systems, email, chat and/or phone is required so issues of moderate complexity and beyond can be escalated immediately to the SSCF infrastructure personnel. Job duties can vary from day to day but include a mixture of user and hardware technical support (e.g. OS/software installation and maintenance; demonstrating correct usage of standard productivity applications; computers, mobile device and peripheral installation and troubleshooting); system administration tasks (e.g. user and computer management tasks in the campus Active Directory environment; web site administration; network connectivity monitoring and provisioning); A/V IT support (e.g. recording/projection equipment configuration/training; production and distribution of multimedia materials); and other information systems supports tasks as needed (e.g. applying standard security policies and monitoring/remediating vulnerabilities; creating database backups; creating/enhancing moderately complex scripts on Unix and Windows servers in support of administration tasks and web-based applications). Other duties include maintaining the SSCF hardware and software inventories, generating reports on the basis of this data, and documenting local procedures. The departments of Cognitive Science and Psychology have animal research facilities. Must be okay with working with animal research. Occasional overtime and weekend work required.
Qualifications
Demonstrated experience with database administration. Working knowledge of computer operating systems such as Win 10 & 7, and MacOS. Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs. Working knowledge of computer hardware and peripherals installation, configuration and maintenance. Working knowledge of document management systems and its processes. Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot and repair moderately complex problems with computing devices, peripherals and software. Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. Knowledge of incident response procedures. Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications. Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs. Knowledge of data management systems, practices and standards. Demonstrated knowledge of computer security tools, best practices and policies. Demonstrated skills applying security controls to computer software and hardware. Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems or related area and 2 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. General knowledge of several areas of IT. Knowledge relating to the design and development of software. Knowledge of secure software development. Demonstrated testing and test planning skills. Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner. Demonstrated understanding of how system management actions affect users and dependent / related functions. Interpersonal skills sufficient to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner. Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines. Willingness to cooperate with and assist other staff with resolutions. Strongly service-oriented in attitude and actions.
