Position Description
The Marine Physical Laboratory Division (MPL) Division at SIO is seeking an Oceanographic Instrumentation Technician (MARINE TCHN 1). Under general supervision, the Oceanographic Instrumentation Technician shall operate and maintain oceanographic research instrumentation related to hydrophones, data recorders, and acoustic release transponders at sea and on shore. Additional duties involve: Assist with preparation of ocean-going mechanical, electronic, and computer equipment, including ordering parts and instrumentation assembly, testing, and shipping. Deploy, recover, refurbish, and evaluate quality of acoustic research equipment and acquire hydrophone data at sea aboard various vessels including small boats and large ships. Assist with preparation, calibration, and repair of underwater acoustic sensors including hydrophones and transducers. Assist with mooring design, component selection, and builds. This position supports the oceanographic instrumentation needs of multiple research groups. Dr. Kaitlin Frasier is the primary investigator for the Scripps Machine Listening Laboratory. The Scripps Machine Listening Lab works at the intersection between oceanography and machine learning, extracting actionable insights from large underwater acoustic datasets, with a deep understanding of physical, biological and anthropogenic sound sources. The lab develops big data-based solutions to address current challenges in ocean observation, monitoring, and management using sound.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Marine Sciences; or Engineering; or an equivalent combinationof education and experience. Flexible with ability and willingness to accommodate varying schedules and sudden changes in field assignments. Willingness to promote and foster effective, clear communication with multiple research groups, including both technical and scientific personnel as well as students. Ability to work with others under demanding conditions, sometimes for extended periods of time. Ability and willingness to work on and around ships at sea and in port, and ensure that high safety standards are maintained. Working knowledge of computer systems (Windows operating systems) and general computer literacy. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and virtual meeting and messaging tools. Ability to safely operate university vehicles, pickup trucks, and other field support vehicles in support of laboratory, dockside, and marine field operations.
