Position Description
DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW Facilities Management (FM) Landscape Services Division works throughout the campus to maintain the landscape, hardscape and urban forests of UCSD. The division works with campus facilities and planning offices in order to provide an aesthetically pleasing landscape conducive to learning, while offering excellent customer service. Maintaining over 1,200 acres of campus landscape, 10 miles of roadways, and 25,000 trees in our urban forests, as well as the removal of over 10,000 tons annually of solid waste and recycling, Landscape Services is a key player in the University’s efforts to conserve and protect natural resources. The division’s construction crew builds and maintains such hardscape as bicycle racks, sidewalk and roadways; the mechanics maintain and repair all landscaping equipment and bollards; the tree crew, in addition to tree service, also places flags and services the flagpoles on campus; the recycling team services all recycling containers and bins; and the landscape technicians plant, fertilize, prune and replace the greenery that dresses the exterior and interior of the campus. Litter pick-up, servicing of trash and recycling receptacles, prevention of storm water contamination, and flood prevention measures such as sandbagging are tasks accomplished by all crew members. Coordinating with local and state agencies to meet air and water conservation standards, UCSD serves as a showcase of “green” landscaping by seeking out and using low-water-use technologies, native and drought tolerant plants, recycled irrigation water and eco-friendly chemicals. Landscape Services also oversees pest control campus-wide to prevent disease vectors and harm to buildings, plants, animals and humans. POSITION OVERVIEW Under supervision of a Landscape Services Superintendent, perform a variety of unskilled manual tasks. Load and unload trucks and other vehicles. Clean outdoor areas; remove debris and refuse from work sites. Dispose of chipped branches and other debris at appropriate unloading sites. Assist skilled and semi-skilled workers by hauling, carrying, holding and lifting materials and equipment. Set up and maintain a safety zone with cones, barricades, safety tape to identify areas of landscape work. Operate, maintain and clean power tools, brush chipper, stump grinder, chainsaws or other Landscape Services tools in a correct and safe manner. Collect recyclables from various locations on campus. Clean and maintain recycling and litter sites and receptacles, and loading docks on campus. Collect items left outside recycling bins and load into correct bins for recycling. Report any bin/dumpster damage to supervisor. Assist Landscape Services personnel by maintaining shrub beds and other planted areas to include pulling weeds, raking and performing minor trimming of shrubs. Sweep, blow and/or shovel mud and debris from walkways, roads, building entrances and outdoor terraces in order to keep campus walkways and roadways safe and clear of debris. Effectively perform in a team oriented service environment. Provide expeditious, professional and courteous customer service. Effectively work with campus customers and co-workers to accomplish work with a high level of quality and efficiency. Operate computer to access work assignments, special projects, customer communications, supervisor communications, timekeeping, employment benefits, policies and procedures, work-related internet use, email system, Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS), and automated timekeeping systems.
Qualifications
Experience assisting a landscape or general horticulture crew performing a variety of unskilled manual tasks. Experience safely operating, maintaining and cleaning landscape maintenance tools such as mowers, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, line trimmers, chain saws, rakes, shovels, hoes, brooms, and other related landscape maintenance tools. Experience safely operating, maintaining and cleaning landscape equipment such as stump grinders, brush chippers, trenchers, aerators, tractors, roto-tillers, and other commonly used power driven landscape maintenance equipment. Demonstrated experience operating large stake bed trucks, lift trucks and tractors. Basic experience using standard computer systems and applications including Microsoft Office Suite, computerized maintenance management (work order) systems, such as Maximo, electronic mail and web based applications. Basic knowledge of recycling standards. Demonstrated skill to communicate effectively to persons at all levels including division supervisors, staff and campus community. Ability to prioritize high volume work load subject to frequently changing priorities. Ability to maintain acceptable work habits, punctuality, regularity of attendance and meet deadlines. Ability to follow through and carry out assignments Ability to work effectively in a team-based, service oriented environment. Ability to effectively communicate orally, in writing and electronically with a diverse campus population. Ability to build and maintain customer relationships through a professional approach in handling customer service needs and resolving problems efficiently. Ability to problem-solve and exercise sound judgment in order to communicate and respond promptly with tact and diplomacy. Ability to model and advocate UCSD Principles of Community.
