Position Overview
Salary range: A reasonable estimate for this position is $6,000 per online course development project. Percent time: Part-time by agreement on a project-by-project basis. Anticipated start: Position is expected to begin in August 2026. Review timeline: Review of applications begins immediately and will continue as needed. Position duration: Project length differs depending on the number of credits, number of online course modules, subject, and level. Projects typically range from approximately 4 to 6 months. Further agreements may be assigned based upon program needs, meritorious performance, and funding availability.

Position Description
UC Berkeley Extension (UNEX), the continuing education branch of the University of California, Berkeley, has been building bridges between UC Berkeley and the public since 1891. UNEX serves the professional and continuing education goals of thousands of people each year and plays an essential part of the University mission to: extend the research and scholarship of UC Berkeley to a global community; increase access to higher education for non-traditional, online, and international students; and improve the workforce. UC Berkeley Extension is a part of the division under the leadership of the Dean of Extended Education that also includes Berkeley Summer Sessions, Berkeley Study Abroad, and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Course developers will serve as subject matter experts and develop one or more professional continuing education online courses for our Professional Sequence in Editing within our Arts and Humanities department. All duties are performed remotely. All work must be performed in the United States, whether in person or online. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
Qualifications
Basic qualifications(required at time of application)Bachelor’s degree or equivalent international degree required. Additional qualifications(required at time of start)3 or more years of professional industry work experience since degree. 1 or more years of online teaching experience since degree. Preferred qualifications4 or more years of professional industry work experience in professional editing (copyediting, developmental editing, indexing, proofreading) and/or professional technical writing, technical editing, and technical information design. 2 or more years of teaching, training or coaching experience in the course subject, within a U.S. corporate environment, or at a U.S. college/university institution. Experience teaching online and/or developing academic content for online courses. Experience in creating original academic content such as syllabi, learning objectives, lectures/presentations/scripts, learning activities, assignments, assessments, exams, and quizzes. Ability to support the success of all students through inclusive curriculum, classroom environment, and pedagogy. Ability to commit time to approximately 10-15 hours a week over 4-6 months (specific delivery schedule determined by mutual agreement). Ability to participate in regular phone/video conferences M-F between 9am-5pm (USA Pacific Time). Effective verbal/written communication and presentation skills (English), including ability to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information and ability to collaborate with colleagues and work within a team environment. Effective organizational skills with attention to detail. Proficiency in (or willingness to learn) instructional and other technology, such as: Learning Management Systems (Canvas); lecture/presentation capture applications (Panopto); online video conferencing (Zoom); Microsoft Office (Word and PowerPoint); file sharing (Google drive or Dropbox); and Google Workspace tools (email, calendar, docs, sheets, slides, etc).
