Position Description

Dr. Miriam Marlier in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health is recruiting an assistant project scientist to study the impacts of California wildfires on human health. The research activities will include developing satellite and atmospheric modeling datasets of wildfire smoke pollution, linking smoke pollution exposure to human health outcomes, and analyzing wildfire smoke in the context of other climate-related exposures. The Assistant Project Scientist role is responsible for leading and/or co-leading research projects aimed at understanding and mitigating the health effects of wildfire smoke exposure. This role requires an individual with interdisciplinary background, who is highly organized, results-driven, and able to work effectively in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment. The Assistant Project Research Scientist must be able to manage/assist on multiple projects simultaneously and have strong leadership skills to motivate and inspire team members to achieve project goals. In addition, this role requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with communities and build strong partnerships to address project goals. This position requires a combination of scientific expertise, project management skills, and leadership abilities.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications PhD in Environmental Health Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Engineering, or a related field Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Excellent written and oral communication skills Expertise in conducting advanced atmospheric modeling and remote sensing analysis Experience in validating atmospheric modeling simulations with ground-based measurements Project management experience Ability to work independently and as part of a team Experience in writing grants, acquiring funding, and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students Good communication skills and the ability to present work and results to a wide range of audiences Publication record in scientific journals
