Position Description
The Study of Religion IDP at UCLA welcomes applications for a part-time Lecturer in Jainism and South Asian Religions. The position will be expected to teach a total of four courses over the 2026-2027 academic year, including two courses in the area of Jain Studies, one comparative course in the area of Jainism and non-violent religious traditions, and one course in Religions of India. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Religious Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Literature, Philosophy, or related disciplines, and must demonstrate an approach to undergraduate teaching of religion that balances a philosophical, doctrinal, or ethical framework with engagement in the anthropological, social, historical, and political dimensions of religious traditions. A record of academic training in Jainism or of academic research on Jainism is a requisite, but candidates should be qualified and available to teach survey courses not only on Jainism but on other major living South Asian religious traditions such as Hinduism and Sikhism. Focus on modernity or the present age, experience of field research, research on gender and sexuality, diaspora, media and popular culture, political organization and activism, and inter-religious dynamics in South Asia and within the South Asian diaspora will be considered favorably.
