Position Description
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR LECTURER POSITION Fall 2024 UCLA Master of Social Science Program Position Description: The UCLA Master of Social Science program (MaSS) is seeking to hire a lecturer for the 2026-2027 academic year to teach SOC SC 402: Quantitative Data Analysis in Social Science, SOC SC 403: Quantitative Evidence and Analysis in Social Science, and SOC SC 404: Research Design in Social Science. This three-course series is required for all students enrolled in the MaSS program. The expected enrollment is between 35-40 students. These courses introduce students to fundamental statistics and data science tools widely used in the social sciences. Students develop core skills for evaluating and presenting quantitative research evidence. The statistical concepts covered include descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, probability, statistical tests, correlation and causation, and regression analysis. These course uses of the R statistical programming language. These courses are taught in a seminar format and include a mix of lectures, demonstration of software tools, tutorial guided self-study, team-based collaborative work, and discussion. See Table 15 for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $79,887 annual rate (salary point 5). Internal applicants will be considered for reappointment prior to the consideration of external applicants. Qualifications: Applicants should hold a PhD in a social science or related discipline. Prior experience teaching quantitative methods, quantitative data analysis or statistics, preferably with experience teaching at the graduate level, is required. Additionally, mastery of R statistical programming is necessary.
